Snowsport South Regional Training Day

We are planning to arrange a Snowsport South Regional Training day at Southampton on Sunday 15th January (9am to Midday). We have been in discussions with the Downhill Only Race Academy (DHO) which is one of the oldest alpine skiing clubs in the world under Head Coach Emily Evans. They are based in Wengen, Switzerland and organise a number of events on the UK calendar. DHO have agreed to provide coaching for Snowsport South athletes for the 3 hour session and we invite all racers to attend free of charge.

This session is being offered in return for the time and attention of the parents of those taking part. All events (local, regional and national) need support from volunteers to make them a success and without bringing new volunteers through the events will eventually have to stop. We want to take the opportunity to dispel some myths and allow people to try their hand at some jobs without having to worry about getting it wrong AND we want to raise awareness of some of the subtleties of UK dry slope racing. This will be a really good opportunity for all parents, new to the sport and those who have been around a while, to learn and share experiences. We will even provide hot drinks and biscuits!!!

The Agenda for the morning will be along the lines of:

  1. Update on rules relating to helmets

  2. Racers then depart for DHO coaching

  3. Parents Session

  • Overview of roles on a race day

  • Terminology

  • Correct Passage of a Course (this will include explanations of different courses)

  • Dry Slope Course Criteria

  • Timing and Calculations

We will then go out slope-side to observe and apply what we can (e.g. starter, gate judge, finish referee, etc).

Please take the opportunity to come along, learn a little, ask questions, get some coaching and help the sport continue! IT’S ALL FREE!!!!

Please email Nigel Vincent treasurer@snowsportsouth.org.uk to register your interest before 10th January 2017. If you have a particular interest in the timing aspect, it would be helpful to know that in advance as well.
